At the Child Neurology Foundation, we believe helping parents and health care workers who take care of kids with neurologic conditions and disabilities can lead to better care and outcomes. From previous information we gathered, we know that many parents come to us for the first time when they are in a crisis. For many, their lives feel like a series of emergencies due to being isolated, not having enough care, lack of breaks for rest, high costs of care, and fighting for their child’s inclusion.
We understand that because of these tough situations, sometimes children with neurologic conditions and disabilities are misidentified as a burden. We know how hurtful it can be for anyone to hear or believe that they are considered a burden, especially children. We want to make it clear that children with neurologic conditions are not a burden to their parents, families, doctors, schools, or communities. The real problem is the lack of support, which can make caregivers feel overwhelmed and blame their children for their stress. However, we know their children are not the source of their trauma.
All of CNF’s work is to support caregivers and remove the barriers that cause these feelings of burden. Our goal is to create a world where all children can reach their full potential. We welcome discussions about how to overcome our own biases and help caregivers and all those who interact with children with neurologic conditions do the same.
